"
further on page 49 of the same document under the heading Guidelines for Considering
Moved Properties 1. "In order to be elgible, a moved property significant for architec-
tural value must retain sufficient historic features to retain integrity of design,
materials, workmanship, feeling, and association, and therefore to convey its architectural
significance."
further on page 50 of the same document under the same heading 3. "The historic and
present orientation, immediate setting, and general environment of a moved property
are important factors to consider in determining whether the property is able to convey
its architectural qualities or historic associations following a move."
further on page 50 of the same document; "A moved property that meets guideline
1 or 2 can be elgible if the property ... and if the setting and the general
environment of the old and new sites are similar."
RECOMMEDATION
The HPC staff recommends in favor of the nomination of the Dille/Probst House at
520 East Colfax in South Bend, IN. to the National Register of Historic Places.
The nomination of this property essentially hinges on two factors: 1) the architectural
significance of the property; and 2) the move of the property to its present location
in 1987 and the concurrent loss of historic fabric and setting.
As to the first factor: The Probst House is constructed of yellow Notre Dame brick.
This building material is of local origin and plays an important role in the
architectural history of South Bend and the University of Notre Dame. The marl used
to form the bricks came from pits located on the Notre Dame campus. Deposits were
worked on campus from 1846-1899. During this period the brick was used on many
Notre Dame buildings as well as several South Bend churches and commercial structures.
•
