CERTIF,ICATE___GFAPPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT.
PROPERTY -- 1067 Riverside Drive
South Bend, IN 46616
OWNERS -- Roman Sysyn
DESIGNATION -- Riverside Drive LHD
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
1067 Riverside Dr. is in the Riverside Drive Local Historic District. 1067
was rated as a non-contributing structure on the Indiana Historic Sites and
Structures Inventory during a 1985 survey, however, the current staff has
re-evaluated the property and feels that the structure is worthy of a
contributing(C/9) rating. This American Foursquare house was built in
1908, and its first resident was attorney Louis M. Hammerschmidt of Deahl
and Hammerschmidt Attys. Mr. Roman Sysyn has been the owner of 1067
Riverside Dr. since 1973.
PROPOSED CHANGE
Construction of a concrete retaining wall at the northwest corner of the
property's front yard with the dimensions of 8' x 4' x 8' in length,
approximately 18" in height, and approximately 6" in width. As part of
this project two portions of a concrete sidewalk at the rear of the
property will be repaired in kind.
STANDARDS
District standards (1,A,1) state the introduction of new site elements such
as "new plant materials, fencing, walkways, streetlights, signs, and
benches shall be compatible in size, scale, material, and color."
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that the HPC approve this proposal. The proposed section
of retaining wall matches in dimensions, materials, and color an existing
retaining wall already bordering the remainder of the front yard area, and
is compatible in scale with the property and area's environment.
A. Kotzbauer
11-10-92
