May 11, 1992
STAFF REPORT
Mr. Brian Crumlish
1091 Riverside Drive
South Bend, IN 46616
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT
The c.1909 dwelling at 1091 Riverside drive was designed by local
architect Ernest Young for Thaddeus M. Talcott, a prominent
attorney. The building is an outstanding example of Ernest
Young's Prairie style designs; Ernest Young also designed several
other Prairie style residences in the Riverside Drive Local
Historic District.
PROPOSED CHANGE
Replace existing cedar shingle roofing on garage with simulated
cedar shingle, Timberline series.
STANDARDS
II. Existinq Structures
C) Windows and Doors
1) Required: The existing shape and materials of the roof
shall be retained.
2) Recommended: Whenever possible, the original shape and
materials should be restored. Particular effort should be
made to retain unique materials not commonly found
in new construction. Roof covering which is
deteriorated beyond repair should be replaced with new
material that matches as closely as possible the existing
or original in composition, size, shape, color and texture
3) Prohibited: Nothing shall be done to change the essential
.character of the roof by adding architectural features or
roofing materials inappropriate to the style of the house.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The proposal is not in keeping with the letter of the standards
as cited above. However, the owner asserts that he changed the
roofing material of both the garage and main house from asphalt
roll to the existing cedar shingle in 1977. The roofing is
currently in deteriorated condition; the owner indicates the
cause is in performance problems with the current material.
The proposal is to replace with Timberline asphalt shingle, which
advertises that it replicates the wood shingle profile. Upon
viewing the sample, the staff is not in accordance with this
assessment. The staff suggests locating an alternative material
that would preserve the visual integrity of this Prairie
residence as did the previously installed cedar shingle.
-- James V.
