changed. They now permitted a straight exit from
the vestibule. The new steps would require a
90-degree turn to exit.
2. The molded entablature under the eaves would
be replicated, but in a simplified form.
Mr. Bennett said the angle of the steps had
been changed to accommodate a tree in the back
yard.
Mrs. Choitz asked whether the staff had
discussed the simplification of the trim with Mr.
Bennett. Mr. Pastor said he hadn't yet been able
to do so. Mr. Bennett said he intended to match
the trim on the main entablature as closely as
possible.
Mrs. Choitz asked why the issue of trim had
been raised at all; hadn't the owner promised to
replicate the old vestibule as closely as
possible? Mr. Bennett said the specifications
for trim were still rather sketchy. He said he
would match the trim as closely as possible
without resorting to custom molds. Mrs. Choitz
said certain HPC members could lend their
expertise to this problem, if the owner so
wished.
Mrs. Choitz said she wanted to make a new
motion. Mr. Oxian said she could either withdraw
her first motion, or add to it. Under new review
procedures, motions could be amended with the
approval of the person seconding.
Mrs. Choitz moved to approve the proposal. adding
that the trim be replicated as closelv as
possible. Mrs. SDorleder approved the addendum.
Mr. Bennett informed the Commission that the
bottom part of the vestibule was older that the
top, and had once been part of an open porch.
Did the Commission also require him to replicate
the molding around this bottom part? Mrs. Choitz
said only the molding under the eaves need be
replicated.
Mrs. Sporleder asked what type of siding was to
be used. Mr. Bennett said it was 8" vertical
wood tongue & groove.
Mrs. Sporleder voiced the concern that the
balustrade would not follow building code
requirements, since it apparently lacked
intermediate balustrading. Mr. Bennett said
there would indeed be intermediate balustrading,
though it wasn't yet shown on the plans.
Mr. Oxian asked whether clearer specifications
should be required. Mr. Bennett said he could
easily amend the plans to more clearly indicate
the balustrading. The reason he hadn't yet done
so was that he didn't know the exact dimensions
yet.
Mr. Holycross asked whether the staff could
approve this last item. Mr. Oxian said it could.
The motion was aDDroved unanimouslv. Mr. Oxian
instructed Mr. Bennett to obtain staff approval
for the balustrading.
4
