609 Portaqe Avenue - Formerly the South Bend Conservatory of
Music; a significant Queen Anne structure built by local firm
Whitcomb and Keller and designed by local architect W.W.
Schneider.
Cleveland Road -Witter Cemetery - A nineteenth-century burial
ground; the resting place for significant pioneer families, Civil
and Spanish-American War veterans and the local German pioneer
community.
Ireland Road -Rohrer Cemetery - A pioneer nineteenth-century
cemetery; burial place for several significant Centre Township
pioneers and families; a fine collection of burial markers and
various decorative elements.
The period has also saw a great deal of work put into several
potential local landmarks: the Southern Hotel at 802 S. Main, one
of the last remaining hotels of its type in the city, built to
serve businessmen during South Bend's heyday of industrial
activity; and 58666 Ireland Trail, a W.P.A.-built caretakers
cottage servicing a water reservoir, unusual as an example of
residential architecture built by local Depression -era government
workers. The HPC was unsuccessful in its attempt to landmark the
W.P.A. structure due to local government resistance, however, the
issue of designating and saving the Southern Hotel from
demolition is still being addressed.
HISTORIC DISTRICTS
The staff worked on two proposed Local Historic Districts in
1991 --potentially to be named Monroe Park LHD and Camp Rose LHD.
The Monroe Park proposal, first introduced at the May HPC
meeting, will have a second reading and public hearing at the
February, 1992 HPC meeting. The staff and the Near Northwest
Neighborhood Association began the various tasks of assembling
data and analyzing the proposed Camp Rose district in December;
historic research and further analysis continue into 1992.
On October 8, Third District Councilman William Soderberg
introduced a bill seeking to amend the boundaries of the
Lincolnway East Historic District. The HPC held a public hearing
on the matter on December 16; as a result of the hearing the
Commission sent an unfavorable recommendation to the South Bend
Common Council. The issue continues in 1992.
The Commission
Appropriateness
properties:
Local Landmarks
618 Leland Ave.
713 Cushing St.
607 Leland Ave.
1028 Wayne St.
reviewed sixty-one (61) Certificate of
applications consisting of the following
(11)
5450 Miami Road
713 Cushing St.
710 Park Ave.
61191 U.S. 31 S.
723 Park Ave.
121 Studebaker
1028 Wayne St.
