TECHNICAL REVIEW OF PRESERVATION GUIDELINES
WHAT DO THE PRESERVATION GUIDELINES SAY ABOUT WINDOWS?
The Guidelines state "Original windows and doors,
including sash, lintels, sills, shutters, decorative
glass, pediments, hoods, and hardware shall be retained or
when deteriorated beyond repair, replaced with units and
trim resembling the original."
ARE THE WINDOWS IN QUESTION ORIGINAL?
Clearly not. The windows were put on at the time of a
subsequent enclosure of the original back porch.
There are three factors to consider in determining that
the windows in question are not original. Refer to
attached diagram. First, the basement of the house runs
under all other rooms. A crawl space runs under the front
porch and the former back porch in question.
Secondly, the exterior wall shows a break where the
original structure meets the later wall.
Thirdly, interior walls 1 and 2 (as shown in the attached
diagram) and the ceiling of the former porch are paneled
in the original tongue and groove style. The added walls
3 -and 4 (including the window) were not. In fact, the
walls had no finishing of any kind and the exterior wood
was visible from the inside.
The window in wall 4 was badly deteriorated and probably
never of a very good quality.
We will have pictures available at the Commission meeting
to support the above analysis.
WHAT THEN DO THE PRESERVATION GUIDELINES SAY ABOUT
ADDITIONS?
The Guidelines state "Porches and additions reflecting
later architectural styles, and which are important to the
building's historical integrity shall be retained."
