ADDENDUM TO LANDMARK STANDARDS: MOVING STRUCTURES
Movinq (a) An historic landmark or a significant building in a
Historic District may be moved to another site only if it is shown
that continued location on its current site is inconsistent with
preservation of the historical and architectural character of the
landmark considering (1) the purpose of historic preservation, (2)
the landmark's architectural and/or historical value and
significance, (3) continued preservation and protection of original
structure, its material and important details, (4) the relationship
of the landmark to other buildings in the historic district, and (5)
the position of the landmark in relation to the street, right of way,
and to other buildings and structures.
(b) The moving of landmarks is discouraged but is preferable
to demolition. A Certificate of Appropriateness is required to move
a landmark or structure in a historic district, and the owner must
establish satisfactorily the criteria for moving as set forth in
subsection (a) of this Section.
Adopted by the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St. Joseph
County, February 17, 1992.
MISC/HISTORIC
