1
November 22, 1991
STAFF REPORT
T. George Podell
c/o Thomas Marullo
814 Arch Avenue
South Bend, IN 46601
PROPOSAL
Apply non -yellowing breathable water repellent to brick (brand
name "White Roc 7").
STANDARDS
II. Existine Structures
A) BuildinL- Materials
4) Not Recommended
Waterproof or water repellent coatings or surface
consolidation treatments should not be used unless
required to solve a specific problem that has been
studied and identified. Coatings are frequently
unnecessary, expensive and can accelerate
deterioration of the masonry.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The use of water repellents is discouraged but not disallowed by
the standard sited above. The building's wall surface, composed
of a brick first story and a wood clapboard second story,
recently received a water wash to remove vine roots. The
contractor wishes to apply the water repellent as a protection
against masonry deterioration. As it appears from the street,
the brick as it exists appears solid and in good condition.
The staff recommends that the commission discourage the owner
from applying the water repellent film.
4
