Staff Report
City of South Bend
Monroe -Edgewater Intersection
Proposal
The city proposes to rehabilitate the lift station at Monroe
and Edgewater, with the majority of the work to be done
within the structure below grade except the installation of
two 3' valve (indicator) posts to be mounted on top of the
existing structure as directed by the Indiana Dept. of
Enviornmental Management.
A second project, being bid as an alternate, would involve
decommissioning the lift station at Edgewater and Bronson,
with the structure to remain. An 8" sanitary sewer along
Edgewater to the Monroe -Edgewater lift station would be
constructed, with the roadway along Edgewater to be removed
and replaced, including a new curb and gutter. The existing
roadway alignment and width would be maintained. The boat
launch constructed by Kevin Smith next to the lift station
at Bronson and Edgewater would not be disturbed. (Drawings
available for both projects.)
Standards
Required
Distinctive existing features sucha as . . .streets,
alleys and building setbacks shall be retained.
Prohibited
Existing relationships of buildings and their
environments shall not be destroyed through widening
existing streets, changing paving materila, or by
introducing inappropriately located new streets of
parking lots incompatible with the character of the
neighborhood.
Recommendation
The staff recommends that the city be permitted to proceed
with their plans, as per drawings and certificates of
appropriateness submitted by Lawson -Fisher Associates. The
project(s) do not change or alter the landscape, structures,
or roadway in any manner other than corrective maintenance.
