Save the South Bend Foundry office building, or move it if
the Foundry itself cannot be restored and used as offices.
Other Buildinas
The Police Credit Union should be demolished.
The Shetland building should be cleaned up and restored.
Save the gate next to the Standard Surplus Building --east
side.
The present owners of the assembly building which includes
the water tower should be encouraged to rehab their building
and the surroundings to be in keeping with new multi -use and
up -scale area.
All other commercial buildings listed should be saved: 903
S. Main, 1013 S. Main; 1138-40, 1202 S. Lafayette; 1213-1225
S. Main; 1319 S. Lafayette; 1401 S. Main, and 1424 S.
Lafayette should be re-evaluated.
Any number of small industrial buildings south of Sample St.
are worthy of reuse and should not be demolished just
because it is the easiest thing to do.
Houses
Recommendation: Allow demolition.
None of the houses I saw looked significant enough, or in
good enough shape to save.
The houses should be relocated in a small neighborhood that
could recall the kind of area seen in Indianapolis'
Lockerbie Square, with infill houses appropriate in style
and price for their location.
All residences in the Studebaker Corridor should be
evaluated, and the well -constructed and maintained ones
should be offered to anyone willing to move them. Or, the
city or a developer could move the houses into the 1300
block of South Main Street as a small residential area.
Houses to move include 1101, 1103, 1120, 1150, and 1307
Lafayette; 117 and 119 W. Stull; 1408 S. Main. Renovate the
following houses for moving; 1130, 1134, 1140, 1304 S.
Franklin.
Additional Comments
