V. Old Business
A. Hedgerows and Urban Forestry
Mrs. Sporleder stated that a graduate student at Notre
Dame was looking for a topic to research. She
suggested that he work on hedgerows. He seemed
interested and may be conducting research on that topic
which would be of interest to the Commission.
Mrs. Sporleder also discussed the possibility of
obtaining urban forestry grants.
VI. New Business
A. Historic Trees on Lincoln Way West
Mr. Oxian identified the trees in question and
requested that this be considered first reading for
those trees as historic sites. That portion of Lincoln
Way West is currently under state jurisdiction, but
will fall within city or county jurisdiction within the
year, thus possibly endangering these trees.
B. Resolution to Save Wooded Areas
Mr. Oxian requested that the Commission adopt a policy
which would state that the Commission encourages the
Common and County Councils to adopt policies which
would conserve local wooded areas.
Discussion ensued over the style and wording of the
resolution. All agreed that such a statement would be
useful, and asked Mrs. Dixon to compose the resolution
for review by the Commission at a later date. Mrs.
Sporleder moved that the resolution be composed; Mr.
Herendeen seconded; motion approved.
C. Public Relations Policy
Mr. Oxian suggested that the Commission adopt a policy
that would require any Commission member planning a
public speaking engagement, conversing with members of
the media, or attending a meeting at which they are
asked to speak on behalf of the Commission, to let the
president, vice-president (public relations officer) or
director know prior to the event. If a situation
occurs in which the member is unable to contact any of
the above-mentioned people prior to the engagement,
they would contact one or all of these persons as soon
as possible after the event. Thus, in the event that
the media contacts one of the officers or the director,
they will be informed prior to contact with the media.
