IL South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - July 3, 1996
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued....
Church as a replacement for other Church
property which has been taken by the
Commission for redevelopment purposes. I
question whether the proposed public
taking of my property for non-public
purposes is appropriate. Accordingly, I
wish to register my objection to the
inclusion of my property on the List. I am
quite willing to negotiate with St. Hedwig's
or South Bend Heritage Foundation with
respect to this property. However, I do
not believe it appropriate for the City to
use its condemnation process where the
benefit is provided only a private entity.
Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely
yours, Stephen G. Smith.
Mrs. Kolata explained that South Bend
Heritage Foundation has acquired a
number of properties, including some from
St. Hedwig, and that she believes that
Mr. Smith is correct regarding the purpose
in which it is to be used. Where they
disagree with Mr. Smith is (where he says)
that it is not (for) a public purpose. The
public purpose being the redevelopment of
the Chapin Street area by allowing this
project to take place and to get the new
development in there.
Ms. Auburn closed the Public Hearing for
whatever action the Commission wished to
take.
Ms. Auburn asked what is on the property.
