The Children's Dispensary and Hospital is an excellent example of an early <br />twentieth century institutional structure. The building has retained most of <br />its original integrity including a terra-cotta reproduction of Luco-Della <br />Robbia's "Bambino" over the entrance. <br />2. The building was designed by Willard M. Ellwood, a prominent South Bend architect. <br />3. The Children's Dispensary and Hospital Association is an important charitable <br />organization in the city of South Bend. Founded by Dr. Charles E. Hansel along <br />with Dr. J. B. Berteling in 1909, the organization's purpose -was to lower the <br />child mortality rates. The Dispensary offered free milk along with medical <br />and dental care. In 1951 the milk fund was discontinued and in 1966 all <br />medical operations were turned over to Memorial and St. Joseph hospitals. The <br />organization is now involved with the administration of Camp Millhouse. 1045 <br />West Washington was the third location of the association and was built to offer <br />the children of South Bend the best medical care available. <br />
