APPENDIX "A" 8-85 <br />historic preservation commission <br />of south bend and st. Joseph county <br />0. <br />LANDMARK RECOMMENDATION <br />J. C. Lauber Company <br />504-508 East LaSalle <br />1900 and 1924 <br />The J. C. Lauber Company building is recommended for landmark status for the following <br />reasons: <br />1. The J. C. Lauber Company has been in business in South Bend at the same location <br />since 1893 and is the oldest extant sheet metal works in South Bend. Although small, <br />the company has had many commissions in both northern Indiana and southern Michigan. <br />The firm produces metal skylights and cornices and is engaged in tin, tile, and slate <br />roofing, metal ceilings, fire doors, ventilating and heavy metal sheet work. Today <br />most of J. C. Lauber's architectural work consists of restoration and maintenance. <br />Lauber's customers have included the Miller -Knoblock Wagon Company, Singer Manufactu- <br />ring Company, Studebaker, Muessel's Brewery, South Bend Lathe, University of Notre <br />Dame and St. Mary's College. <br />3. The J. C. Lauber Company has remained a family business since its founding in <br />1890 and is currently managed by Howard Schmidt, J. C. Lauber's grandson. J. C. Lauber <br />the founder and proprietor of the J. C. Lauber Company, was also a director of the <br />LaSalle State Bank and the LaSalle Building and Loan Association as well as the <br />treasurer of the Sunnyside Land Company. <br />14.
