Appendix B <br />■ ■ ■ <br />h�stor�cpreservation mmission", <br />of south bend and st. joseph county <br />ROOM 1123 COUNTY CITY BUILDING - <br />south bend, indiana 46601 (219 284.9798);.; <br />D R A F T <br />of a Letter to the Common Council <br />Honorable Common Council Members: <br />The Historic Preservation Commission, by its ordinance, is committed to preserving our <br />architectural. heritage by surveying, identifying, planning for and advising the Common <br />Council concerning the designation of historic landmarks and districts. Of the various <br />historic areas in South Bend, the Commission feels the - Central Business District'is one <br />of the most important and is an area in need of positive planning for the future. <br />Because of its commitment to, downtown, the HPC would like to work _with building owners <br />to inform them of the benefits of preservation. As there are approximately forty <br />buildings which are historically and architecturally significant in the -central downtown. . <br />area, the HPC wishes to request the passage of the enclosed ordinance in order to have <br />time to approach building owners on landmark status. <br />The Commission will discuss with owners the following areas: <br />1. Local landmark status <br />a. Standards to be applied <br />b. Benefits of <br />2. National Register designation <br />a. tax benefits <br />b: benefits of preservation easement program <br />If an owner refuses consent, the HPC will re-evaluate the designation of that particular <br />building and make a recommendation to the Council -accordingly. <br />
