January 13, 1975 <br />Page 3 . <br />President's Report <br />Mr. Smith reported that he had met with Roger Parent con- <br />cerning the two buildings that the Commission recommended for <br />landmark status at the last meeting. Mr. Smith stated that <br />he and Mr. Oxian would attend the next caucus meeting of the <br />Common Council and would discuss the Union Station and the <br />Kresge Building.,. <br />Budget and Finance Committee <br />No report. <br />Historic Districts Committee <br />No report. Ms. Price, on behalf of Southhold Restorations, pre- <br />sented the Commission with a map that had been color coded to <br />illustrate the Master Study done of the West Washington proposed <br />historic district. <br />Historic Landmarks Committee <br />Mr. Oxian reported that the County Commissioners had approved <br />four buildings and structures for historic landmark designations: <br />the Darden Bridge, The Coy -Savidge house; and the two court houses. <br />Mr. Smith stated that the Commission is now responsible for <br />placing plaques in front of each landmark. Ms. Davisson said <br />that she might be able to get one of her students at NSB to <br />make the plaques and would look into it. Mr. Smith stated that <br />another source might be the State Penitentiary. <br />Mr; Oxian reported that he had received over fifty letters in <br />response to his letter in the Tribune concerning the Kresge <br />building. All the letters received were in favor of saving the <br />building and having a five and ten cents store in the downtown area. <br />Mr. Oxian next reported that condemnation signs have been put on <br />the Kresge building stating that it is unfit for occupancy. Mr. <br />Oxian reported that this was not a usual procedure, and was an <br />affront to the Commission. He moved that a letter be sent to <br />the Board of Public Safety and the Building Department stating as <br />much. Ms. Woolridge suggested that we ask the Building Department <br />for clarification of their procedure regarding a building that is <br />vacant. Mr. Smith suggested that someone from the Building Dept. <br />be invited to attend the next meeting. Ms. Davisson moved that — <br />Mr._Forrest West be invited to the next meeting and asked to pro- <br />vide the Commission with the stanaards and procedures for con- <br />demnation. Mr. Rothermel seconded the motion and it passed. <br />Mr. Oxian moved that he appear before the Board of Safety and <br />ask why the Kresge Building has been condemned. Ms. Davisson <br />seconded the motion and it passed. <br />Mr. Oxian next reported on a letter he received from Mrs. <br />von Karowsky requesting that her home (407 W. Navarre) be declared <br />
