South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - December 15, 1995
6. NEW BUSINFSS (Cont.)
e. continued...
Mr. Beitzinger read the staff report
on the project. Midwest Windows &
Doors is a manufacturer of vinyl
windows and patio doors for
replacement and new construction
markets. Windows and doors are
fabricated from vinyl lineals.
Insulated glass is also manufactured
for the windows and doors. Products
are distributed and sold to
distributors and dealers in a
surrounding five state area. Their
project calls for the purchase and
installation of one Aculite glass
cutting table and two CNC vinyl
cutting machines. The total
estimated cost of the new equipment
is $125,000.
Midwest Windows and Doors
recently purchased the business from
Fiberlux, a division of TreDegar
Industries, Inc. Fiberlux in South
Bend was a cost center which was
not making enough profit to sustain
the operation. TreDegar had planned
to eventually close the plant. The
buy -out of Fiberlux's South Bend
plant by Midwest Windows & Doors
saved the business and 49 jobs. The
restructuring of the manufacturing
processes, which includes the above
equipment, is imperative to the
success of the company and the tax
abatement is an integral and
necessary part of the restructuring
process. The new equipment will
allow Midwest Windows and Doors
to better service its customers,
-15-
