Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and St . Joseph County
voted to send to you a recommendation to designate the property at 710 N.
Cushing, South Bend, Indiana , as a Local Historic Landmark by ordinance .
Attached for your review is a bill that would do so if approved, and a HPC
staff report for your information.
The Historic Preservation Commission has received consent from the owners
of the property, Hazar and Eugenia Garabedian, for this designation and
believes that the property is significant and worthy of protection for the
following reasons :
1 . The house is the work of a significant local architect , Walter W.
Schneider, that exemplifies the early twentieth-century vernacular form
of architecture now called American Foursquare by architectural
historians ;
2 . The structure 's materials and architectural details remain unaltered and
as a whole exhibit a level of craftsmanship and design uniquely
characteristic of the period (1924) .
I look forward to discussing this proposal further with you. Thank you for
your attention to this. matter.
Sincerely,
Fred M. Holycross
Director
