Supervisors are expected to be familiar with an employee's appearance, behavior and <br />work habits, and to be alert for negative changes. <br />It isn't possible or desirable for a supervisor to determine whether the changes observed <br />are t the result of emotional illness, physical illness, and alcoholism or drug abuse. <br />Changes could result from illness, properly prescribed drugs used as directed, or <br />fatigue. In other words, the supervisor shouldn't make a diagnosis - leave that to <br />qualified professionals - but he should be able to spot significant changes in behavior <br />patterns. <br />Extremes in behavior of an employee may suggest the individual has a problem that should <br />receive medical attention, or be brought to the attention of the personnel department. Marked <br />changes in behavior and job performance are key signals. <br />Symptoms may arise suddenly or gradually, may be short-lived or continuous. Some signs and <br />symptoms suggesting possible alcoholism or other drug abuse are: <br />• Deterioration of job performance - decreased productivity, damaged work, lack of interest in <br />carrying out assigned tasks, difficulty in understanding instructions or taking direction, poor <br />memory, bad judgment. <br />• Long, frequent visits to the washroom or unexplained absences from the work area. <br />• Non -work -related visits by strangers or employees from other areas. <br />• Increased absenteeism (often with a Friday and Monday pattern or following a holiday <br />weekend). Constantly showing up late for work. <br />• Frequent change in mood, ranging from agitation, excitement, nervousness and irritability to <br />undue fatigue, drowsiness, inattentiveness. <br />• Clinging dependency on supervisor or fellow employee. <br />• Rebelliousness, contempt for authority. <br />• Complaints from co-workers about employee's behavior. <br />• Deterioration in dress and appearance (may include marked weight loss). <br />• Long periods of staring into space. <br />Page 17 of 22 <br />
