South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - November 5, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
Mr. Brademas expressed dismay at reading
in the paper that one of the items to be
provided for Century Center under the
City's bond is a banquet facility. There are
many other banquet facilities in the area
which would be in direct competition with
the Century Center banquet facility and
would suffer from the additional
competition. He does not feel that the
government should be in competition with
the private sector.
Mr. Brademas noted that the Mayor has
always promised that the Hall of Fame
would be funded by donations from
corporations outside of the community, not
from tax dollars. Now, here is a bond that
is structured to be paid from tax increment.
There seem to be no firm commitments from
corporations. Mr. Brademas thinks that the
Mayor should at least indicate how much
has been committed, without naming the
donors.
Mr. Brademas noted that the Hotel/Motel
Tax Board can fund the $2.6 million bond
from its present income. He doesn't want
anyone to think that it is necessary to go
through these gyrations in order to fund the
improvements to Century Center.
Ms. Auburn acknowledged the role that the
Hotel/Motel Tax Board has played in
supporting Century Center. She noted that
there are often people who do not approve
of the direction the Commission takes nor
where it is going. We have just heard from
one such citizen.
51PA
