;+ South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Special Meeting - November 15, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
GRANVILLE CLEVELAND: I am
Assistant Law Librarian Emeritus at the
University of Notre Dame. I've got two
comments. I don't want to take too much
time. When Coveleski Stadium was being
built and Mayor Parent had that vision of
how Coveleski Stadium would work, there
was a lot of opposition about it. As a matter
of fact, I was one of the ones who said it's
not going to work. It'll take tax money out
of my pocket. It'll be a mess. Nobody will
go to it. Everything is going to be terrible.
Well, I apologize to Mayor Parent and to his
committee for my public appearance about
that whole thing. I apologize and I wish
somebody here would take that message to
him. Once again we have an opportunity,
and there is some opposition out there, to
uplift South Bend with a major, major
thing —the College Football Hall of Fame.
As being Emeritus at the University of Notre
Dame, I still get a chance to go around the
country and talk to students who want to
come to Notre Dame, be part of the Notre
Dame mystique, etc. One of the things they
say to me as we talk is, "South Bend,
Indiana. That's where the College Football
Hall of Fame is going to be." I say, "Yes,
how do you know that ?" They say their
coach who gives them motivational talks says
that if you ever, all of you who are here,
could one day be in South Bend, Indiana, to
the College Hall of Fame... I say, "That's
right!" I stick my chest out and say, "I have
a lot to do with that. " I want to take credit
for that, too.
91
