South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
very excited about the plan and look forward
to working with these partners.
Mr. Magliozzi explained the Sample -Ewing
Development Plan. The new redevelopment
area combines two existing redevelopment
areas, the Studebaker Corridor Development
Area and the Rum Village Industrial Park,
with adjacent residential areas to their east to
create the Sample -Ewing Development Area.
The new development area is approximately
21400 acres. It is sub - divided into five sub-
areas for planning purposes: the Rum Village
Industrial District, the Studebaker Corridor,
the Indiana - Sample Industrial Corridor, Rum
Village Neighborhood, and the Southeast
Neighborhood.
Mr. Magliozzi pointed out that this area is in
what was the historical industrial and
residential heart of South Bend. The Southeast
Neighborhood and the Rum Village
Neighborhood are among the oldest
neighborhoods in South Bend. They originally
housed the employees of the businesses located
in the large industrial areas. The commercial
areas along Indiana Avenue and Main and
Michigan Streets developed logically between
the workers homes and their employment.
With the demise of Oliver Chilled Plow,
Studebaker, and White Farm, the
neighborhoods declined dramatically,
especially the Southeast Neighborhood. There
has been a significant drop in the number of
housing units as well as in the value of the
housing.
U
