South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - May 21, 1993
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
MR. COLLIER: I guess my response to that
is that you said that this development in that
area was probably precluded, if not for public
dollars being involved, so that makes me
wonder whether it might revert to agricultural
land.
MRS. KOLATA: I think that's also unlikely
given the presence of the railroads, chopping
it up into large sectors that would probably
make farming a portion of it very difficult
because it's not like you have vast, open
fields going on and on. You do have a lot of
railroad going through there. So that's
already set that way.
MR. HUNT: That's a good question. I think
a couple of things, outside this area, have
happened in the community. I think the Area
Plan Commission, several years ago,
established a very aggressive policy on zoning
and protecting agricultural land. They are
working with that and doing a good job,
trying to force, in a positive sense, urban
development into urban areas. While we
would be giving up some agricultural land
(the muck soil is obviously good for
agriculture), this area is already served by
infrastructure, water, sewer and rail. I think
it would be more beneficial, in the long term,
for the community to try to get the urban
development, the industrial development,
closer in to where we already have related
development and infrastructure—as opposed
to having it hop - scotch out into the county
-35-
