Mrs. Kolata noted that three of the claims approved in item 3. of this agenda are to be paid from these appropriated funds and need to be re- approved. Upor a motion by Mr. Piasecki, seconded by lvr. Doncho and unanimously carried, the Commission reaffirmed their approval of the claims submitted November 27, December 4, and December 11, 1989. Mrs. Aub redeclared her conflict of int est and did not vote. Ms. Bonham, from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, asked the Commission what the progress was with the proposed downtown hotel. Mrs. Kolata responded that the staff has been discussing design issues and market issues with the developers. We have asked for information about their market research and have not received that yet. We are nearing the end of the 60 day exclusive negotiating period. Ms. Auburn stated that questions have been raised aocut the need for another downtown hotel ani the Commission does not want to move forward until the need has been establi ed. She asked Ms. Bonham her opinion Of the need for a hotel in the Ms. Bonhm stated that the Convention and Tourism Bureau tracks all of the convention business that South Bend loses. In the last two years there have only been two conventions that inquired here and did not choose South Bend as the location for their convention because of a lack of downtown hotel spice. Both wanted their meeting and sleeping space in the same building and subsequ tly chose very large hotels which could a to that requirement.
