South Bend edevelopment Commission <br />Regular Mee ing - December 8, 1989 <br />6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.) <br />7. <br />d. continued... <br />Mrs. Kolata noted that three of the <br />claims approved in item 3. of this agenda <br />are to be paid from these appropriated <br />funds and need to be re- approved. <br />Upor a motion by Mr. Piasecki, seconded <br />by lvr. Doncho and unanimously carried, <br />the Commission reaffirmed their approval <br />of the claims submitted November 27, <br />December 4, and December 11, 1989. Mrs. <br />Aub redeclared her conflict of <br />int est and did not vote. <br />Ms. Bonham, <br />from the Convention and Visitors <br />Bureau, <br />asked the Commission what the <br />progress <br />was with the proposed downtown <br />hotel. <br />Mrs. Kolata responded that the staff <br />has been <br />discussing design issues and market <br />issues with <br />the developers. We have asked <br />for information <br />about their market research <br />and have <br />not received that yet. We are <br />nearing <br />the end of the 60 day exclusive <br />negotiating <br />period. <br />Ms. Auburn stated that questions have been <br />raised aocut the need for another downtown <br />hotel ani the Commission does not want to <br />move forward until the need has been <br />establi ed. She asked Ms. Bonham her <br />opinion Of the need for a hotel in the <br />Ms. Bonhm <br />stated that the Convention and <br />Tourism <br />Bureau tracks all of the convention <br />business <br />that South Bend loses. In the last <br />two years <br />there have only been two <br />conventions <br />that inquired here and did not <br />choose South <br />Bend as the location for their <br />convention <br />because of a lack of downtown <br />hotel spice. <br />Both wanted their meeting and <br />sleeping <br />space in the same building and <br />subsequ <br />tly chose very large hotels which <br />could a <br />to that requirement.
