South Bend
odevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting - April 13, 1989
6. NEW "INE.SS (Cont.)
b. Continued...
Jeff Gibney: Mr. Nintz and other members JEFF GIBNEY
of the Redevelopment Cmnnission, I would
1' e to give you a very brief sketch of
scme planning that is taking place right
now within South Bend Heritage
Foundation's staff and it's Board of
Directors. This planning is, in fact,
pait of a three year Plan which the South
Bend Heritage Foundation Board has
de eloped and is also an action plan for
our agency as also very much a compliment
to the report that has been presented
tonight in terms of its interest and
surport for low income housing.
I would first like to say that South Bend
Heritage has a fifteen year track record
for a commitment to the West Washington
neighborhood, and although we have
expanded our services into the margins of
downtown South Bend, and into Monroe
Pazk, it is the West Washington
neighborhood where South Bend Heritage
Foundation got its start in 1974 and
inly where it continues to have its
major thrust in the neighborhood. So it
is out of that experience with the
neighborhood that these plans are being
reccmwnded. First of all, I would say
that we really got involved in this and
became supportive because, in general, an
abEolutely thumbnail sketch of the
sLmmary of this plan, that on West
W n Street we are reccnmvz ding the
cordensing of the conyercial district and
the expanding of the residential housing
caffiponent in that neighborhood.
As we began to look at development, we
began to look at the issues of financing
for housing, ownership and management,
finally, the actual physical
development and construction. I think,
as rost everyone in the room knows, the
dol ars available for affordable housing
today are fewer than they have ever been
bef Dre. And it would be very naive of us
-16-
