In 1987, 61 structures were boarded by the Department of
Code Enforcement in a continuing effort to save houses that were
abandoned by their owners. The boarding kept the structures
inaccessible to intruders and to the danger of fire.
An order of demolition is viewed as the last step, after
all other remedies have been exhausted to require an owner to
repair his property. The Department of Code Enforcement has the
authority to issue an order of demolition only when conditions
exist whi h are a threat to public safety and welfare, when an
owner has made no effort to bring the property up to Code when
he has ha notice and opportunity to do so and when the cost of
repairs g eatly exceeds the cost of demolition.
I ha e attached some exhibits which give a history of
demolitio s over the past several years and would be happy to
answer an questions Commission members may have regarding the
procedure of the Department of Code Enforcement.
