Mr. Nimtz: I amwriting to you on behalf of the Boa d of Directors of the South Bend Public Tranportation Corporation regarding the Redevelopment Commission's recently released Downtown Development Plan. We share your excitement about the prospects for additional downtown development that lie before us. Transpo and its predecessors have always been a vital part of downtown South Bend and we intend to be tomorrow also. Therefore, we t to request the Commission's continued consideration of Transpo as an integral component of downtown redevelopment. With regard to the Plan, I would like to offer two specific comments. First, we obviously took note that a parking garage was proposed at Transpo's current transfer center site. It was specifically mentioned at the presentation of the Plan on September 11, that development of the site as a joint use transit center /parking garage was under consideration. Over the many years we have utilized this location as a transfer center, we have found it to be optimal for our customers. With the completion of major improvements to the center earlier this year, we obviously woull like to enjoy several years of use of tie facility exclusively as a transfer cent r. However, we would be interested in e loring the possibility of a joint use transit center /parking garage as propDsed. If such an arrangement was not work le, an alternative site centrally located in the downtown would be critical to serving the needs of Transpo patrons. Secondly, we would like to comment on the plan3 for additional parking garages in downtown. While we do recognize the dominance of the auto, we want to -3-
