South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLICIHEARING (continued)
We haVE a few other items that we would like to note
that WE are recommending for changes. Originally we
had be (n anticipating widening Bronson Street from
"Marie to to Lincolnway ". We'are going to recommend
instea that the language in our plan be changed to
"Columbia and Lincolnway ". At the intersection of
Bronsori with Lincolnway we are going to attempt to
purchase the property so that we can line up that
intersection and install a traffic light at that
intersection. We think that that will facilitate
access to both the Edgewater and Monroe - Sample
neighborhoods. We also think that that will facilitate
us in attempting to restrict traffic out of the in-
dustrial area that we are wishing to establish so that
it doe n't intrude further up Lincolnway. Certainly
Lincolnway functions as a major artery and will always
carry hat type of traffic, but we think we can limit
the traffic that is generating from the area we are
establ shing somewhat if we can provide easy access
off Bronson Street through a traffic light.
Originally we also had Columbia and Carroll Street south
of Bronson as being listed as vacated. We have a number
of different property owners along there that may or may
not choose to have that vacated, and we have decided to
withdraw that at this point from our list. Should that
be pursued `in the future, it can be pursued simply by a
petition from those property owners. We felt that it
wasn't necessary to include that in our plans at this
time.
We wil also be acquiring some properties in order to in-
stall ome turning radii at Columbia and Bronson, and
Fellow and Bronson, so that traffic which will come from
Fellow3 can move over easier than they can right now up
Columbia Street. One of the positive things that has
come f rth recently is that TRANSPO will be running a
bus li a down Columbia and Fellows, providing that we
make t ese adjustments. They are currently using
Fellow3 Street and they find it to be a very dangerous
inters ction at the north end and would like very much
to be able to utilize the Columbia Street entrance into
the neighborhood. 14ith a traffic light at Columbia, it
makes it a good deal safer.
We are also noting that George Avenue will be vacated,
which qas overlooked in our original submission. Clinton
Street from Bronson Street to Frontage Street will be va-
cated, that is a new item we have added as well. Various
