South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Me ting - March 20, 1981
5. PUBLICIHEARING (continued)
Butler because it raised some legal problems which;,have
never come before us. As explained to these gentlemen
yesterday, the City, and particularly the Redevelopment
Department, have been very much concerned about a
grocer store in that area. I told them that I get a
telephone call about once very ten to fourteen days
from the ladies living in the Karl King Tower asking
why they don't have a grocery store in that area. I
don't know why they don't go to Max's Grocery because
they deliver seven to ten orders per day to this apart-
ment.
Mr. Niritz further stated that he gets calls from the
Edgewater area asking when they will be getting a
grocery store in that area. We can't go out and put in
a grocery store. What we have to do is try to interest
private entrepreneurs and developers to do that. fir.
McMahon and I have had some discussion with one of the
entrepreneurs in the area and asked him to get in touch
with Max's Grocery to see if they could get together and
combin efforts. We are concerned about a grocery store
in that area and would like to see this place stay there.
You ar a neighborhood institution. You have been there
many y ars and have a relationship with the neighbor-
hoods, and as far as I know they like you, so we would
like t have you stay in the neighborhood.
Mr. We !t said he wanted to make himself perfectly clear
to the Commissioners for what he is asking today. I am
not as ing for my letter to be forwarded any further than
here. If you care to forward it on to HUD, then good.
I am a king that the Commission hold up on this resolution
until such time justice has prevailed in the Monroe- Sample
Street area. I do not feel that the Commission can actually
pass t is resolution here today and say that we have done
all we are able to do for all those individuals that are
involy d in the Monroe- Sample area. I have been here in the
City of South Bend all my life and have worked in the job
that I have worked on for the last fourteen years. I have
delt with community services and I am awfully afraid that
Max's rocery is going to get lost in the shuffle.
Mr. Ci a said that his being in the grocery business for a
good many years he understands Mr. West's point. You have
made a good point this morning, but don't you feel with the
loss o business you are going to have with loss of residents
there, you would pick up if you could be located on.Lincoln-
way be ause of the traffic and the Karl King Apartments?
I really believe there is a need for a nice convenience store
there.
21
