Mr. Kernan.: We are looking at a project that is possibly a`once in a lifetim . opp rtunity for the City of South Bend. It will be sit impractical for us to ect a one hundred million dollar in stunt over a two or three year per od without providing some sort of incentive for them to come here. It bec s even more critical with: the fac that New Energy has.an option on a Ate in Rolling Prairie. The tax rat out there would be roughly half of t it would be in South Bend. A par el of land that they are looking at would cost about half of what a par el.in South Bend would cost. There- for a a tax abatement for New Energy is rea ly a necessity in order for us to attract them into the City of South Bend. On behalf of the City I would ask your fav rable consideration for the request of tax abatement. Mr. Nimtz: I am aware that some.of the Ccmnissioners were present at the press con erence when Senator Birch Bayh and Con essman Brademas made this announce- men:, so I am sure that you are aware of e plans of New Energy Corporation. Mr. � Kagel, is there anything you would liko to say about this? Mr. Kagel: Having lived in South Bend all my life, knowing the muck farms which usel to burn, and can still burn, I am sure the people in the southwest part of Souffi Bend would certainly appreciate hear- ing that the muck is going to be removed -13-
