SOUTH END REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
SPECIA MEETING: Jul
_v 10, 1975
Page 19.
ventions that have been proposed here, or were asked here, or were
concerned about meeting here, that did not desire Notre Dame's
facilities. So that these were lost to the community altogether.
So it isn't exactly an either /or proposition. I think that one
can supplement the other and what would happen downtown here would
not be a threat to Notre Dame's business necessarily."'
Mrs. Allen said she meant the people who would come to the convention
downtown, would have to seek space farther out, because the local down-
town -- when you go to a convention, you normally stay close to the
convention. So, as soon as they are filled up, they have to run North
and that is her point. That if you build more space for them downtown
to accommodate the smaller conventions that we hope to get, then those
people will stay downtown.
Commissioner Wiggins said this is a part of the kind of responsible
studies that are required, and it is difficult to know exactly what
will happen in terms of conventions, what is expected, and what kind
of space the Century Center will have could generate. You have to
figure out the maximum that it could generate and then work out some
percentage kind of thing that seems reasonable and project that along
with the amount of space you have and the amount of space you will
need and these things, I think, have or can be made and it should be a
part of that, and I would think that anybody who was interested in
investing that kind of money, would have already made such studies.
4.
