8. PU LIC HEARING (Cont'd)
Mr. Wiggins You know, -I don't think this maintenance ought.to be all that
(Cont' d) difficult, and perhaps a bit of the problem is that we just
need to educate people to follow instructions and read direc-
tions.
Mr. Solltesz:
(Someoe in
audie ce):
Mr. Ch
That's right:.
That's tough:
ney: I think the primary use of that block down there is to get
some business for the merchants, and I know they have held
several affairs down there, and I have been down to see them.
I am hearing from some here that there has been a large crowd
of 2,000 to 5,000 people when it was more like 500. 'Maybe I
was blind when I was down there, but I didn't ;see that many
people. They might have been some place; maybe, they had
then hidden some place.
And, another thing - -I read the paper - -I have never had a
merchant in that block say yet, that it increased, or that
they got any business from them. Further, why are we putting
them in their for?
Mr. Wilggins:
That is just my opinion. I am not in favor if it. I am NOT:
Do something to get some business down there for the merchants:::
Well, if we can draw people, he will have to take his chances
to .get customers out of the people when they get there.
Mr. Ch nney: Well, that is just what I said! You hz;ve had them downtown,
and you haven't got a merchant who won't tell you that you
haven't helped his business any.
Mrs. Allen:
Mr. Chonney:
Mr. Wiggins:
Mr. By
The fact that you just had a little stage - -a little make -shift
stage for people to operate on. It really doesn't draw the
type of people that would go in and shop. If you have a good
stage up where people can see, and you can have a regular pro-
duction-- sometimes open -air symphonies -- people might come
down and really increase the business.
I go with you there, but there are a lot of poor people that
come down and spend their money too. We don't need to.put up
a stage for the rich people.
Well, partly, I suppose, we ought to have some idea on what kinds
of costs we are talking about here. What are the alternates?
11: I will call on Tom Oesterling. He is here.
loffim
