5. OLD BUSINESS (Cont'd)
satisfied the committee that the winning sculptures and pieces
can now be constructed within the limits of the confines of the
competition -- speaking of that moneywise.
We have asked Dr. Mooney to come up with some local price esti-
mates based on having it fabricated here in the City and the
Commission has a copy of the proposal submitted by Dr. John
Mooney and Mr. Noel A. Yarger, President, North American Signs,
Inc., who would be helping him fabricate "THE CONTINUOUS YOU"
within the confines of the competition rules. Basically we are
now set and to proceed with the engineering and financial assis-
tancE the winning sculptures require and hopefully all the win-
ning entries can be fabricated early this summer- -June or early
July installation.
There are three first place commissions which involve completed
work to be installed and three honorable mentions. A stipulation
was placed on the piece that came in over and above the Commission
recommendation. We asked the winning artist to submit a final
estimate based upon the cost of the price range.
Mr. Bauer said he felt Dr. Mooney has satisifed the Committee's
recommendation and all the winning contestants can fabricate
theiT pieces within the price range -- $7,000.
Furt er discussion followed on this subject.
Moti n was made by Mr. Wiggins for the adoption of the recommenda-
tion of the Sculptural Committee, seconded by Mr. Chenney, and
carr ed by Mr. Wade and Rev. Williams.
President Helmen requested to be placed on record that he is
voting, "No" until the Sculptural Committee has an opportunity
to review the changes made in THE CONTINUOUS YOU. He said in
our conversation a couple of weeks ago, we taked about the con-
tinuation of lighting effects and the size of it - -the width and
material. We used the Sculpture Committee as a guide in helping
us to make a decision and we are using their judgment and need to
select these pieces, but the revised addition of THE CONTINUOUS
YOU s of such importance I think that one should go back for
revi w for the Sculpture Committee because it has been changed.
Moon !y estimated so radically that they should have an opportunity
to r view it and I will withhold my vote until we have an oppor-
tunity to study it.
In r ference to President Helmen's question, Mr. Bauer went into
detail in explaining the changes that were requested by us.
To r tain and enhance the concept of heighth to the original pro-
poseJ scale, they are proposing that the 10' high sculpture unit
be placed on a pedestal which is 6' in height. It will reflect the
form and scope and become one with the sculpture. The total height
will closely approximate the original plan and fit in well with the
sca16 of the site. The pedestal will be made of polished black
FA
