Duvall
Executive Director
Historic Preservation Commission
1123 County-City Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear David:
In response to your request concerning the Department's position on proposed local landmark
status for the property at 518 South Michigan Street, the Department of Community and
Economic Development is please to endorse and support the local landmark designation.
As part of our endorsement and support of the local landmark designation, we ask that you
keep us infQrined as you move forward on the designation. We would also ask that you
continue to participate in the small planning committee (which is being reformed) that has
been working on the South Street Development Plan.
As part of our planning for the South Street area, we will be examining a number of
development options that range from new development to adaptive re-use concepts. Your
proposed South Michigan Street National Register Historic District should also be included
on the list of implementation tools that we will be assessing. At this time we are not ready
to respond definitively to national district status as proposed by the HPC staff.
In closing, we are pleased to endorse and support your proposal to designate 518 S.
Michigan Street as a local landmark. Please feel free to submit this letter to both the
Historic Preservation Commission and the City Council as part of the designation process.
1200 County-City Building•South Bend,Indiana 46601.219/235-9371 •Fax(219)235-9021 •TDD(219)235-5567
Redevelopment Business Assistance Bureau of Housing Financial&Program Planning&
Ann E.
