-6 <br />b. Vacations. The Department shall adhere to the vacation policy as estab- <br />lished by Section 2 -46 of the Municipal Code of the City of South Bend. <br />All exc pt temporary or part - -time employees shall be entitled to a vacation <br />period. All vacations must be taken by the employees, and no employee will be <br />otherwise compensated in lieu of taking his vacation. No vacation time accrued <br />may be carried forward into a new calendar year. <br />Holidays falling within the normal work week for which the employee would <br />normally be paid will not be counted as vacation time. <br />Employees shall not be entitled to take a vacation until they have completed <br />their probationary period, however_, they .shall accumulate vacation .credits during <br />this period. If an employee begins employment prior to the 15th of the month, he <br />- will be giv vacation credit for the full month. <br />All employees who leave the service of the Department for any reason shall be <br />paid accrued vacation credit at the time of separation. Employees who leave before <br />completing their probationary period shall not be entitled to vacation pay upon <br />separation. Employees dismissed for cause may forfeit vacation time in the discre- <br />tion of the Executive Director. <br />Employees should apply for vacation periods well in advance of the date desired. <br />Department head supervisors shall schedule vacations over as long a period as pos- <br />sible, and are responsible for the operation of their department through a vacation <br />period. <br />c. Sick Leave. General definition: Sick leave is granted to employees to <br />protect them from endangering their health and that of their fellow workers. It <br />is meant to be a protection, in case of need and not a benefit to be used whenever <br />wanted. Th refore, it is the duty of the Executive Director and all department and <br />division heads to protect the Department against loss of time from unjustified <br />sick leave. Feigned sickness or abuse of the privilege are grounds for dismissal,; <br />discipline cr suspension at the discretion of the Executive Director. Sick leave <br />will not be allowed in cases where illness or disability is self- imposed by bad <br />habits or a licious contributing actions. <br />All ex ept temporary or part -time hourly employees shall earn sick leave with <br />pay for each year of employment at the rate of 15 working days per year accumulative <br />to 30 days in accordance with Section 2 -45 of the Municipal Code of the City of <br />South Bend. For any leave of absence without pay, other than leave because of <br />injury on the job, which exceeds two weeks in any month, no sick leave credit shall <br />be earned during such period of leave of absence.
