4. COMMUNICATIONS <br />. Letter dated March 15, 1971 from Beltone <br />Hearii Service: An earnest check, in the amount' <br />of—$2S,00, was submitted by Mr. Stanley E. Thomas, <br />Chairman, Bauer for Mayor Committee, to rent the <br />former Neumode Store at 115 South Michigan Street <br />The f rm has advised, in subsequent 'phone calls, <br />that n the contrary they are not interested in <br />renting the space. Mr. Ashenfelter advised the <br />check will be returned. <br />b. Letter dated March 15, 1971 from Environ- <br />mental Planning and Design: This firm was previously <br />known as Simonds and Simonds, our Pedestrian Mall con- <br />sultants. They agree our visit to the Pittsburgh and <br />East Liberty Malls were beneficial in sharing exper- <br />iences and that it was a real ,pleasure and privilege <br />havinc the men who attended. They ask we reiterate to <br />the Commission their strong recommendations that the <br />devel pment of the Way include a system of canopies, <br />prefe ably as indicated on the preliminary plans. They <br />feel that only with the canopy system can the Way provide <br />an am nity that will assure its success. They will form <br />an essential linkage between all components of the Way, <br />will rermit optimum lighting and signing, and will create <br />a visual quality of great importance. <br />c. Letter dated March 18, 1971 from Downtown,South <br />Bend ouncil: Mr. John R. Kagel, Executive Director, <br />expressed t eir thanks to the Commission for arranging <br />the visit with the Pittsburgh Urban Renewal Officials <br />in regards to the Mall. They are urging the Commission <br />conduct private meetings with entrepreneurs who may be <br />interested in.making substantial private investment and <br />construction along the mall area and in the South Bend <br />central business district. <br />Mr. Ka el said the Downtown South Bend Council has <br />pledged their cooperation to our Commission in the past <br />and will. continue to do so whenever asked to give a <br />hand. They believe our mall plan is excellent and their <br />consen us of opinion is that we should proceed. <br />The Commission requested the Downtown South Bend Council <br />be not'fied'we will explore the mall further. <br />5.
