Letter dated August 18, 1970 from St. Joseph ST. JOSEPH COUNTY DEPT.
County Department of Public Welfare: This letter is OF PUBLIC'WELFARE,
over the signature of Mr. Wilmer H. Tolle, Director. TEMPORARY OFFICE NEEDS
They are seeking temporary quarters to house their food
stamp unit on the first floor of the building at 125
East Washington, beginning early in September; to be
used for 6 -8 months. They will also need quarters in
two to three parts of the City for selling food stamps,
beginning October lst. Until further directions are
received from Washington, D.C. on what Congress might
do with the Family Assistance Program and direct issuance
of the Food Stamp Program, they have no approved appro-
priation for office rental and the request is for gratis
offices.
President Wilhelm recommended the staff explore the
various properties we have available, scheduled for
future demolition, which could be used for this purpose,
and have this information for the next Commission meet
ing. Also, to contact Mr. Tolle and explore further for
funding. The Commissioners vetoed supplying the requested
quarters, unless it can be done without further expense
to our Department, as we have no funds appropriated for
heating and utilities that would be required.
Mrs. Gu P. Curtis suggested exploring the Model Cities
building. They are using only one floor and it is in
the Mod 2l Cities neighborhood also and centrally lo-
cated. A.C.T.I.O.N., Inc. might help also, as they
have fo r areas.
-5-
