7. PROGRESS REPORTS (Cont'd
and s milar development techniques. This approach
would provide temporary relocation facilities for
businesses who plan to re -enter the downtown area
throu h new .development. In addition, some busi-
nesse may find it necessary to relocate temporar-
ily o the fringe of the downtown area.
Mr. Wiggins asked whether or not new development
could begin before the pedestrian walkway develop-
ment plan is prepared? He was apprised that in
some cases new development could get underway
prior to development of the pedestrian mall. How-
ever, the pedestrian walkway plan will be completed
before the end of this year and the Redevelopment
Commission will not be in a position to dispose of
much and before that time. Mr. Wiggins suggested
a selective process in acquisition and clearance,
takin full advantage of vacant buildings which
are n t crucial for early demolition. This ap-
proack would provide a maximum number of buildings
for t porary relocation purposes.
Mr. H lmen stated the Commission should do whatever
is po sible to avoid businesses from leaving the
downt wn area and going into shopping centers. He
menti ned his concern was that this trend could re-
sult n a loss of retail trade in the downtown area.
Mr. Wggins stated that it is important to make the
Downt wn area as the most attractive place to do
busindss.
8.
