PETITION.
South Bend, Ind., March 19, 1909.
i
To the Honorable
Board of Works,
City of South Bend, Ind.
Gentlemen: -
In connection with the erection of new buildings in your City on North main
Street, it has become necessary for this Company to move its Central Office Exchange
Quarters across Center Street, namely, from the Oliver. Opera House Block to the St.
Joseph County Savings Bank Building and in order not to delay the contemplated im-
provements and at the same time, not to -interfere with the furnishing of telephone
service to any of its subscribers, it_will be necessary to erect two temporary struct-
ures across Center Street; one of these to be a temporary bridge and the other a
temporary cable support.
The temporary bridge contemplated will extend across Center Street at a point
about thirty-two (32) feet east of the curb line of Fain Street. This structure will
be in one span ariek will be supported on the window Sills of the third floors of the
before mentioned buildings. it will clear Center Street at the lowest point somewhat
more than thirty (30) feet. This structure is to be made sufficiently strong to be
amply safe for all loads to be put upon it and is required for the transfer of equip-
ment from one building to the other. It will have a slope roof, water tight and will
be boarded in on both sides to thoroughly guard against any danger either to those
crossing the bridge or those passing upon the street. This bridge will be required
only during the actual process of moving and reconstruction, at the outside not to
exceed three months.
The temporary cable support is for carrying the exchange cables which rise on
an existing pole set on the curb line of Center Street at a -point about forty-eight
(49) feet east of the east curb -line of Alain Street. The cables rising on this pole
now are carried upon a bridge like structure to the Oliver Block. What we propose
is a bridge.like structure about thirty (30) inches wide, estending from the top
of this pole to the top of a third floor window of the Bank Building about fifty-six
(56) feet east of the east curb of Main Street. This structure will have a vertical
depth of about one foot eight inches in its span. It will be equipped also with an
angle brace extending from the pole at a point about ten feet below its top to the
span, at a point about ten feet north of the south curb line of Center Street. This
angle brace serves as a runway for the cables at the immediate south side of .Center
Street, the main span Serving as a roof over the cables to protect: them from debris
from the Oliver Block.
The whole is shown in the attached sketch which shows an elevation looking East
on Center Street, showing the bridge and the cable support behind it. It also shows
a plan of the streets with the structures erected and it also shows a section of the
bridge proposes and the pole with the cable support mounted thereon.
We respectfully petition your Honorable Board to grant us permission to erect
these structures immediately in order that the work may be carried on with all speed.
Yours respectfully,
CENTRAL UNION TELEPHONE COMPANY,
E. T. Bonds
Encl. Manager.
Petition granted, provided however the structures mentioned shall not be main-
tained across Center'Street longer than 90 days from date, and provided further that
that such construction be made subject to the approval of the City Enginere and
entirely at the risk of the Central Union Telephone Co. as to liability for accidents
and injuries resulting from the construction or maintainance of said structures.
