The ommission also approved for Mr. Bellinger to attend <br />an American Institute of Planning (AIP) Conference to be held <br />June 7 -8, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, on motion by Mr. Helmen, <br />seconded by Rev. Kirk. <br />j. As a result of the Amendatory Application in connection <br />with the LaS lle Park Project, R -57, along with the need to ac- <br />quire certaft additional properties which cannot feasibly be <br />rehabilitate J, the Commission approved the execution of three re- <br />use appraisa contracts (1) Urban Research Associates of Wash- <br />ington, D. C , (2) North Central Appraisal Company of South <br />Bend, and (3 Ron Gettel and Associates of Fort Wayne, not to <br />exceed $2,00 each, on motion by Mr. Kompar, seconded by Mr. Chenney. <br />5. PROGRESSIREPORTS <br />a. <br />Chapin Street Project, R -29. At the request of the Com <br />mission, Me staff re orted on the progress of the site improve- <br />ment activities in the project area. The engineers, Clyde <br />Williams & A sociates, have stated that 78% of Chapin Street and <br />channelizati )n is completed at a cost of $126,000 approximately. <br />Western Aven e, Laurel Street and Scott Street improvements are <br />62% complete at a cost of about $165,000. The Pedestrian Overpass <br />is only 12% omplete. It was pointed out that the overpass work <br />should be co pleted yet this summer barring any extensive delay <br />in negotiate g trade union contracts. <br />b. Relo ation Activities, LaSalle Park Project, R -57. A <br />brochure is ri uted to the Commission illustrated the disbursal <br />pattern of r sidents relocated in the LaSalle Park Project, R -57. <br />There are ap roximately 17 families remaining on the work load. <br />It is felt t at many of these families will remain in the project <br />area, and th staff is working closely with the Housing Authority <br />utilizing tha newly adopted Lease Program which provides excellent <br />housing reso rces for both the Housing Authority and the Redevelop- <br />ment Departm nt. <br />c. Central Downtown Project, R -66. It is the staff's under- <br />standing that this application is still under review by the HUD <br />office in Chicago, and that no unusual problems have arisen. <br />d. A di cussion pursued on the type of housing to be con- <br />structed in 6he LaSalle Park Project, R -57, as a result of the <br />disposition arcels sold by the Urban Renewal Department. <br />Mr. Wiggins poke on behalf of the Commission at the outset by <br />stressing that a traumatic problem is before us in that one of <br />the new homes built by Place and Co. has been burned as a <br />result of violence. A solution to the problem must be found <br />through peaceful means.
