School starts <br /> for the South Bend Community School Corporation on Wednesday,August 22. <br /> School zones with flashing traffic control devices will be enabled,and the South Bend <br /> Police Department,along with the Street Department,will utilize lighted sign boards to <br /> remind drivers that school is back in session. The Street Department is currently making <br /> sure the city's flashing yellow lights are in working order. <br /> The South Bend Police Department will have extra officers out patrolling school zones to <br /> ensure motorists observe the speed limit and other traffic signals, especially when children <br /> and buses are present. <br /> Police will be increasing enforcement in school zones with heavy emphasis on the first <br /> week of school. The department's goal is to correct drivers' behavior, ensuring zero <br /> accidents involving children and pedestrians near schools. Included with speed zone <br /> checks will be increased enforcement of"NO Turn On Red" intersection violations. <br /> Parents of kids that walk to and from school are urged to reinforce good safety practices <br /> while walking near traffic.
