1222 S. MICHIGAN STREET
SOUTH BEND, INDIANA 466o%-282I
Board of Public Works
227 W. Jefferson Blvd.
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Board Members,
CITY OF SOUTH BEND PETE BUTTIGIEG, MAYOR
SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT
STEPHEN F. Cox
FIRE CHIEF
PHONE 5741235-9255
FAX 574/ 235-9305
February 19, 2019
I am writing this to request a compatibility purchase for Stryker Power —LOAD (Model 6390) to replace our current
Power -PRO cots —reference IC 5-22-10-8 "compatibility of equipment is a substantial consideration of the
purchase". These mechanical loading units would be installed in five (5) of our seven (7) front-line ambulances and
replace the seven (7) Stryker Power Cots on all of the front-line ambulances. The remaining two (2) ambulances
are currently being replaced, and the Stryker EMS Power —LOAD is in the specifications.
The reasons we need to use Stryker are listed below:
• In 2009-10 The City of South Bend awarded the bid for the initial Power Cots to the Ferno Company. This was
the Ferno POWERFlexx cot. The cots were not compatible to the specifications of our ambulances. We had to work
with Equipment Services and Ferno to augment the cot for them to be loaded into the ambulances. The Ferno cots
had to be reconstructed twice and special ramps had to be fabricated by SB Equipment Services to create a
situation where all the Firefighters could load the cots.
0 We have a contract with the University of Notre Dame to deliver EMS Coverage to all NCAA required sporting
events. Notre Dame is equipped with Stryker Power Cots on all their medical carts. The Medical Outreach
Emergency Response Cart and the Sports Trainers Cart that is on the field for all home games is equipped with
Stryker.
• At this time, all EMS transport providers, with the exception of one, are equipped with the Stryker Power -LOAD
system. We currently have an Inter -Governmental Agreement with the Saint Joseph County Commissioners to
provide ALS Transport coverage to unincorporated areas of St. Joseph County. We would have the same equipment
consistent with everyone else in the County.
1 would also request, in the same purchase, replacement of our Stair Chairs. The stair chairs have small wheels
and handles that are used to move patients where cots cannot be utilized due to lack of space or stairways.
Funding source is 287-0902-422.43-10—Equipment Purchases/Materials & Equipment
Regar
Andrew Myer
Assistant Chief/EMS
C: E.
