The award was presented for <br /> the part that the South Bend Fire Department played in evacuating downtown South Bend <br /> after a natural gas main was severed on October 7, 2010 on Jefferson Boulevard. <br /> "This award represents the skill and heroism of the members of the South Bend Fire <br /> Department,"Mayor Pete Buttigieg said. <br /> The Fire Department received the award on August 2, 2012 at the NIPSCO Centennial <br /> Celebration. The Fire Department partnered with NIPSCO to provide training to safely <br /> mitigate situations involving natural gas. The inscription on the face of the award reads: <br /> "In recognition of the dedicated men and women of the South Bend Fire Department and <br /> their willingness to partner with NIPSCO to improve emergency response procedures, <br /> natural gas safety training, and damage prevention. We strongly believe your efforts have <br /> increased public safety in South Bend." <br /> The Luminary Award goes to four community leaders and organizations to recognize <br /> their integrity, faith and confidence in Indiana and the Northern Indiana region. <br /> "The men and women who serve on the Fire Department are well equipped to handle <br /> emergency management situations and work hard to be prepared for emergencies which <br /> was reflected in the evacuation of downtown,"Fire Chief Steve Cox said. <br /> The award will reside at Central Fire Station at 1222 S.
