THE AVON THEATRE
STAFF REPORT
The building was reviewed by Staff, Timothy Klusczinski, Brad Dennis of Ziolkowski
Construction,Fritz Herget of Arsee Engineers, with Bruce Burnett and Dave Wilcox
Facilities managers for the Library and Tamara Nichol-Smith of DTSB. The building's
exterior terra cotta appeared to be in fair to good condition on the second storey and
capable of restoration—but dependent upon availability of funding. The first storey is
covered in plywood the condition of the terra cotta according to the Library was that
pieces were missing and the "store front"was not in good shape. The interior had been
stripped out of all remnants of the theatre and used for storage. It appeared to be
structurally sound and could be adaptively re-used—but again subject to a source of
funding.
The Commission may decide to pursue land marking for the Avon Theatre in its entirety
or just for the preservation of the terra cotta facade which would then place the building
under interim protection for six months or until a satisfactory solution could be found.
I
