Rod Sutliff, R.S. `rechnical Services <br />On August 29, 2014 Rod Sutliff, owner and CEO of R. <br />S. Technical Services passed from this world. He leaves a <br />legacy of innovation, and many firsts that helped shape the <br />trenchless technology industry. Reliable single -conductor <br />technology was one of many of the contributions Rod <br />gave to the industry. He considered himself a "tinkerer", <br />and his tinkering frequently produced excellent and <br />innovative results in equipment performance and <br />durability. Often, Rod took an idea and made it better, and <br />more applicable for the industry. <br />As the "RS" in the company name, Rod spent more than <br />thirty years pioneering technology in his chosen specialty, <br />leading his firm to become known as "a company of <br />firsts." Under his leadership, the firm was the first to <br />manufacture a mainline camera with internal lights, a <br />true pan -and -tilt camera with tracking lights, and the first <br />single -conductor panomorphic camera system, among <br />many other pioneering products. <br />Rod leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 60 <br />years, seven children, 22 grandchildren and 8 great- <br />grandchildren. His legacy lives on in the children and <br />grandchildren who are very much a part of the RST family <br />in Petaluma, CA. <br />Richard N Schantz lost <br />➢uis battle to cancer on <br />September 6, 2014. The <br />pipeline rehabilitation <br />industry lost a dedicated <br />member. Dick, a civil <br />engineer, began his <br />journey in 1990 with <br />Aries Industries, Inc. His <br />interest in pipeline televising and underground rehabilitation <br />quickly grew to a desire to learn about and educate others <br />in the processes of chemical grouting and underground <br />rehabilitation systems. Dick was a strong advocate for <br />chemical grouting and was an active participant in the <br />development of ASTM standards related to chemical <br />grouting in municipal sewers. Dick was recently inducted as <br />The RST family, however, <br />extends far beyond Petaluma. <br />Rod touched the lives of every <br />person who worked for RST. <br />Each was and is a part of the <br />extended RST family. Perhaps <br />best known for his kind, friendly <br />demeanor, Rod was famous <br />for championing those less <br />fortunate, providing help for <br />people he knew were down on their luck. Over the years, <br />he helped many individuals get their lives back together <br />by providing assistance with housing, money, and/or <br />employment. <br />Rod's outlook on life was contagious. For those of us who <br />knew him well, he will be remembered as a wane, highly <br />intelligent and gentle man with a great sense of humor, <br />and who was a loyal friend. He will be remembered by <br />our industry as a brilliant innovator with an amazing and <br />creative mind who contributed mightily to our industry. <br />R. S. Technical Services, Inc. is a long-time member of <br />NASSCO. Our industry was blessed to have Rod Sutliff <br />as part of it. His innovation and creative mind will be <br />missed. His friends and family will remember his loving <br />warmth, loyal friendship, and kindness to all he knew. <br />a member of the Select Society of Sanitary Sewer Sleuths. <br />He was also the chair of ICGA and was instrumental in the <br />writing of the NASSCO grouting standards. <br />Dick was convinced that integrity, education and training <br />were the best ways to give the grouting industry the tools to <br />succeed. In 2006, Dick started the annual Aries Grout Boot <br />Camp to educate operators, inspectors and engineers on <br />procedures of successful chemical grout mixing, testing and <br />equipment operation. Since then more than 300 people have <br />attended boot camp. <br />Dick was always available and eager to give advice to <br />customers. His analytic approach was appreciated by all. <br />Dick will be remembered for his contributions to the <br />industry, his integrity, dedication and passion.
