SpU TH 8F
 G
z s
1865
CITY OF SOUTH BEND
PETE BUTTIGIEG, MAYOR
OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 16, 2012
Contact: Debra Johnson, Director of Communications
Phone: 574-235-5853
CITY OF SOUTH BEND STREET DEPARTMENT
KICKS OFF SPRING RELEAF PROGRAM
South Bend The City of South Bend Street Department shifts gears every season to
adapt to weather conditions. Now that spring has arrived, the Street Department will start
its annual leaf pick up program. The Spring ReLeaf program will start on Monday,March
19 and run for two weeks, ending Friday, March 30.
Here are some helpful steps from the Street Department for pick up:
1. Rake leaves to the curb line, but avoid raking them into the street, as this will plug
street drains after rainfall, causing them to flood.
2. Avoid parking on top or in front of leaf piles along curb lines, as this restricts the
crews from collecting the leaves.
3. Separate all trash and debris from leaf piles. Leaf crews cannot collect loose leaf
piles contaminated with sticks, trash, and other debris. Trash contaminates the
recycling process, and could damage the leaf vacuuming equipment. Crews will
not pick up these piles, and the property owner will be responsible for disposal of
contaminated piles.
4. Burning of leaves is totally prohibited and in violation of City code.
5. Provide the exact address for the location of the leaf pile, and crews will be
dispatched in the order the requests are received.
The Street Department will only pick up leaves by request. Residents who would like to
request a leaf pile pick up should call the Bureau of Streets at 574-235-9244 between the
office hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Residents who prefer to bag their leaves must call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 574- 277-
8823 to schedule a pick up of bagged leaves.
1400 COUNTY-CITY BUILDING•227 W.JEFFERSON BOULEVARD•SOUTH BEND,INDIANA 46601
PHONE 574/235-9261• FAx 574/235-9892
