Smith dedicated nearly 48 years of service to the City of South Bend. <br /> Smith's retirement party will be held at the Water Works Department office at 915 S. <br /> Olive Street at 11:15 a.m. <br /> "The City of South Bend thanks Bruce for 48 remarkable years of service," said <br /> Buttigieg. "I am honored to give him a Key to the City and I wish him the best in his <br /> retirement." <br /> Smith is retiring as the Meter Department Supervisor,a position he has held for almost 20 <br /> years. Smith started his career with the South Bend Water Works on April 14, 1964. <br /> "My time with the Water Works Department was time well spent," said Smith. "I could <br /> not have asked for a better experience than working for the City of South Bend." <br /> During Smith's years with the department,he spent many days ensuring South Bend <br /> residents had safe drinking water. Years later, Smith became the first Teamster's Union <br /> Steward for the Water Works when the City of South Bend unionized in 1970.
