Both Gilot and Danch provided
background going back over eight year's of collaborative work among the entities having a stake
in its future.. These include the City, Notre Dame, NNRO, NENC, local business and property
owners.
After the presentation Dr. Varner, Chairperson, Public Works and Property Vacation turned to the
public portion hearing from three proponents. Mr. Greg Hockenen, Property Manager for Notre
Dame spoke to the long awaited completion of the project bordering the university. Maureen
Miller a future resident said she can't wait to build in the City. Bill Stenz, President of NNRO
urged the Council to approve. James Harris, owner of an adjacent business, expressed concern
asking for a fair shake.
Councilmember Valerie Schey motioned, Councilmember Gavin Ferlic seconded and all
approved a favorable sending to full Council.
TRANSPO Update
The TRANSPO update requested by the Council began at 4:00 and was brief. John Leszczynski,
President of the TRANSPO Board led the presentation. The essence was that TRANSPO was
running in the red and needed to cut expenses. To accomplish this he said he said the BOD had
delayed their vote on route changes, and other service cutbacks to absorb more community input.
He also noted these changes were "in the works" at public forums for the last six months.
Councilmember Oliver Davis, the Council rep. to TRANSPO said cuts in service to those who
need the service most are not acceptable in their proposed form. Councilmember White
concurred, urging the BOD to look for alternative savings. Leszczynski said that was being done
again. Nonetheless over $1.5 million in savings needed to be found.
Respectfully Submitted,
David Varner, Chairperson
Public Works and Property Vacation Committee
