South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting—December 13, 2011
6. NEW BUSINESS (CONT.)
C. Airport Economic Development Area
(2) continued...
innovation within existing parks they are
familiar with.
Mr. Lake responded that that is happening at
Innovation Park. Also, BSA is a member of
the National Business Incubator Association.
He doesn't have company names, but BSA
goes to conferences annually and it's a very
common theme that incubator managers talk
about how company A lent its technology to
company B which becomes a spin off
company and the sum is better than the
individual parts. The way to get that kind of
sharing of innovation is to get a mixture of
types of research companies. That's what
we're trying to do with a"forest" concept.
Mr. Miles said that the trees portray
sustainability. They don't power buildings,
they power themselves. BSA would use
them as a marketing strategy; something that
emanates sustainability for the future. The
rainwater harvesting is sustainable, and also
saves money to the City of South Bend. At
the highest level sustainability is what BSA
presented as CCHP in the Master Plan:
Combined Cooling, Heating & Power. We
need to make a decision today as to whether
CCHP is the right thing for this park. We'd
like to know this before the first tenants
come into the park. We need to build the
infrastructure into the park up front. What
CCHP does is centralize equipment in the
Renewable Energy Center, for redistribution
of electrical, chilled water, and heating hot
water to all facilities. It can be done in
63
