RESOLUTION NO. 3667-06 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br />JOINING COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD IN DECLARING <br />DECEMBER 1, 2006. AS WORLD AIDS DAY <br />Gvl~~ii~eaa, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, notes that on December 1, <br />1988, World AIDS Day was introduced by the World Health Organization, and that since that date it <br />has been annually commemorated around the world in the attempt to raise awareness of the global <br />AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV infection; and <br />G~~ii~eaa, this year the theme of World Aids day is "Accountability" with people looking back <br />to learn from the past and looking forward to see how to plan and address issues like universal access; <br />with "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise" being the "tagline" for organizations through 2010; and <br />G~1 since 1991, the red ribbon has been an international symbol of AIDS awareness with <br />the "Red Ribbon Project" having its origin in the state of New York; and <br />G~,~inii~eaa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides national leadership <br />to help control the HIV epidemic by working with community, state, national, and international <br />partners in surveillance, research, prevention, and evaluation activities; and <br />G~~eaa, the CDC estimates that over one million Americans are living with HIV, and 24% to <br />27% of these people are unaware of their HIV infection; and <br />c~1~ii~aa, during World AIDS Day 2006, countries throughout the world will be focusing on <br />achieving the following objectives: <br />Enhanced accountability from political leaders on their promises on AIDS. <br />Supporting a broad movement of civil society organizations campaigning to develop their sense <br />of joint identity and common purpose. <br />Generating a greater public awareness of, and engagement with, the problem of AIDS <br />worldwide. <br />~o~, ~~~ex~xe, /e rtxeaa-G~e~~; by the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, <br />as follows: <br />Section I. On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the Common <br />Council hereby declares Friday, December 1, 2006 as World AIDS Day in South Bend, Indiana. <br />Section II. World AIDS Day is an opportunity for individuals throughout the world to unite <br />against the fight against HIV and AIDS so that the spread of HIV will be stopped. <br />Section III World AIDS Day is the perfect time and this is the season for families, <br />institutions of faith, and communities to come together with the spirit of forgiveness. <br />Section T is Resol ion shall be in full force and effect from and after its adoption by the <br />Cou and a r al l` th L~ <br />Der .
